Book which may be of interest[edit]
I found at a very, very cheap price in a used bookstore near where I live "Canadian City Flags: 100 Flags from Abbotsford to Yellowknife". (With older flag versions, alternative flags, and flags of former municipalities merged into other municipalities, there are actually a lot more than 100 flag illustrations in the book.) I guess this is more up your alley than mine, so if there's any info in the book which could be helpful, feel free to ask me... AnonMoos (talk) 12:11, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
- That definitely perks my interest. If you're up for doing some scans, that would be great. Fry1989 eh? 17:25, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
- I'm not really set up to do scans now. Maybe I'll just send the book to you sometime after the holidays (i.e. earlyish 2018) -- though the last time I mailed books to Canada, I had to fill out a customs declaration, and the person receiving them had to pay some kind of tax on the declared value. My favorite flag so far is Inuvik, Northwest Territories, while my least favorite is that of Lethbridge, Alberta (a.k.a. "Fort Whoop-Up"), which is "reflective of what an inebriated person might draw while attempting to draw the Stars and Stripes"... -- AnonMoos (talk) 07:17, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
- That is a very kind offer, though you don't have to if you don't want to. I ship a care package to the US for a dear friend some times and I've had to fill out the customs thing, but he's never had to pay anything on the receiving end. I've also never had to pay on the receiving end for shipping for my banknote collection from various countries including the US, and that's actual money so those have real monetary value...sounds weird to me. Re: Flag of Royal Military College of Canada[edit]
I originally posted the following on PneumaticEditor's user page:
I updated the .svg image for this flag as you suggested, however, user Fry1989 revised my change on the file itself. He says that "It is unclear if the proportions have been deliberately changed or the flags were improperly made." In any case, the .svg version should be used, but should it be the tricolour version or the pale? This is unclear. It appears that in historical contexts, and when RMC flags are sold commercially on the internet, they are 2:3 tricolours, but in contemporary RMC use they are 1:2 pales. That being said, I cannot find any official justification for the change from tricolour to pale.
Here, if you look at the image on the bottom right, the original heraldric artwork for the flag of RMC St. Jean is shown, and it is a tricolour in 1:2. Perhaps this should form the basis for the flag.
Regarding the motto, I believe it should be only in English, as the motto is recorded only in English in the original blazon, which is the authoritative description on how each element of that coat of arms is to be depicted.
What do you think? The CSOTK (talk) 05:10, 9 March 2018 (UTC)
Request for some simple flags.[edit]
Hey I'm just wondering if you could do a simple request, it's File:De Zavala Flag.svg, could you realign the letters so they're actually centered between the points? And maybe change the font to News Gothic?
Beyond that could you also make a variant of it where the S is at the bottom? Since that was actually the format used on the back of Texas Dollars.
Also can you make a red variant since that was mentioned in contemporaneous newspaper reports at the time? Thank you. --Thegunkid (talk) 08:35, 25 April 2018 (UTC)

Before you continue with: UK ~ Singapore ~ Quebec[edit]
I noticed that all these countries were on your todo list. I'd figure that I should give you some information before you undertake these endeavours.
First off: UK. I would be willing to guess that you are familiar with the official illustration repository. However, I do not know if you are aware of the official construction sheet/working drawing repository. If not, let me know and I'll give you the link.
Next up, Singapore. So, we have official government documents. However, the vector illustrations included within are of poor quality. But since many of Singapore's road sign designs are of British origin, it would feel justified to just use the British vector drawings, where applicable and appropriate.
Lastly, Quebec. I know for a fact that you are acquainted with the Quebec repository. I would also guess that you are aware of the construction sheets. But just to be sure, I might as well ask. If you are unsure on how to access the construction sheets, let me know.
VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 17:49, 15 May 2018 (UTC)
- @VulpesVulpes42:, hi there. Always happy to hear from you :)
- So firstly I'll address Singapore. Some of the diagrams do look quite inferior. I've been spending my spare time the last few weeks using Google Streetview and Flickr and some other repositories to try and collect as many photos of real life signs as I can. Some really are "that bad". Take [1] and [2] for the quayside sign, and [3] and [4] for the no overtaking sign, as examples. So I intend to try and make the signs be faithful recreations, even though you and I both think the symbols are pretty shoddy looking. Also a side note, it appears that prior to the late 1990s, Singaporean road signs did not use the backing board and were cut out based on their shape like in most countries. I have collected several photos of signs such as [5], the stop sign, give way sign, and others. I intend to recreate these as well.
- Regarding the UK. When you say official repository, I presume you mean the TSRGD website? I did have a free subscription to it quite some time ago, but then they switched it to a pay service and the price is far too high for me to afford. Which is a shame since the EPS files were of really good quality. I do not know of any construction sheets, so I would be happy to see what you have.
- I didn't actually know that TSRGD was a thing before you brought it up. For free, you can find both EPS images and working drawings on the good old gov.uk. (you'll need to scroll down the page till you get to "Traffic signs images and drawings", and then click on any of the "schedules"). As for Quebec, here's how to access any working drawing. You know this website where you can browse image galleries and download image files? You need to click on any sign in the gallery. When you are on that road sign's individual page, you should see a button "Afficher le devis technique (PDF)", or "View the specifications (PDF)" if you are browsing the site in English. Depending on how your browser deals with PDF files, the PDF construction sheet should either begin downloading, or open up in a new tab. I also believe that they give you the option to include a PDF construction sheet when you download road sign image files. - VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 19:25, 15 May 2018 (UTC)
- I see. They made a web app for the TSRGD. It was very useful. I knew that the signs were still available on the gov.uk website, but they were of lesser quality the last time I checked them out. But that is great to see they have been improved since then.

- As I see it, the British EPS drawings could be useful starting foundations, then fine-tuned according to the working drawings/construction sheets. Very happy that I could help! - VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 20:06, 15 May 2018 (UTC)
Favour request for someone with excellent command of Her Majesty's English[edit]
Sorry to bother you at this tumultuous time, but I would be quite grateful if you could take a quick look at the closer provisions of road sign A19 on my personal sandbox. While I am mostly happy with the translation, the expression "communicate instructions regarding" feels really wonky. I was just wondering if that is A: even grammatically correct, and B: appropriate in context. Thank you for your tremendous help not only towards me, but towards the entire project! —VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 17:28, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
- I will certainly take a look. Thanks. Fry1989 eh? 17:41, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you! Now, I am afraid of coming out as a jerk who asks for help, but then is like "nah nevermind", so let me make one thing clear: You replacing "communicate" with "provide" was immensely helpful and something that I would not have been able to figure out myself. Will keep that for sure. With that said, I have reasons behind the choice of wording when it comes to everything else. When translating Swedish legal texts into English, my number 1 priority is to get the idea across as precisely as possible. My second priority however is to translate everything as literally as possible (within the realm of English grammar and vocabulary, of course). This is why I wrote "especial risk" instead of "high risk", since "särskild" means something in the style of "especial" or "non-ordinary". If you do not have any strong objections against it, I may use "especial" instead. But if you do have objections against that wording, due to it for instance being ungrammatical or not getting the idea across, I would happily settle for something in between, like "especially high", or even just "high", if my arguments were unconvincing.
- Then, I also saw that you replaced "may" with "shall". In the original Swedish version, the idea communicated was more similar to "the transport agency has the right to provide instructions". Maybe it's just me, but the idea that I get from your translation is that the agency is expected to and will announce new symbols as necessary, while in reality I *believe* that (while the agency has the right to issue new standardized symbols) one is supposed to ask the Swedish Transport Agency for permission if one wishes to put up a sign with a non-standard symbol. Unless you have any objections, I will probably replace "shall" with "has the right to". Once again, thank you for being so helpful and for being an excellent co-user! —VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 18:29, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
- Hi. Don't worry, you don't come off as a jerk. I like helping people. I can understand the desire to make the translations be as similar as possible in both wording and the thought being conveyed. My choice to change "especial" was that it is a uncommon word and sounds archaic (to me). The word "especially" is much more common, but if we use that it would require some additional word such as "especially high" or "especially frequent" which you may dislike. I think the synonym "exceptional" might fit well here. But I will leave it up to you. Regarding the second part, I have no objection to changing "shall" to "may". I understand the less strict interpretation that is attempting to be conveyed. Fry1989 eh? 22:41, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
- First off, your help has been invaluable. I got what I came for. You think that "especial" sounds archaic, which I find interesting. You see, Wiktionary categorizes less fashionable words using three words, which are (from weakest to strongest): "dated", "archaic", and "obsolete". "Especial" isn't actually assigned any of these words, so with all things considered, that is probably the word I'll end up using. I just see it as a word where the adverb form for some reason has become a lot more common than the plain adjective form. What's archaic in one language is formal and even common everyday use in another.
- We are essentially done here, so once again, thank you for your help. Cheers! —VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 07:52, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

Hello, great collection of flags. Could you create a Royal Navy Cadets Ensign. Move Flag of a Governor-General of Canada.svg[edit]
Hi. When I made Flag of a Governor-General of Canada.svg, I wasn't aware that it also applies to Lieutenant-Governors. There's probably a much more suitable name for it, but vexillology isn't my area of expertise. Maybe "Flag of a Canadian Governor.svg" is sufficient? Maybe "Blank vice-regal flag of Canada (1870–19??).svg"? What's your opinion? TilmannR (talk) 19:39, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
- Since that model is no longer used (except Nova Scotia in modified form), I'm not really sure what to call it. Fry1989 eh? 20:30, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Question about creating road signs SVGs[edit]
I want to create some SVGs for older Ohio road signs out of the 1950s and 1970s Ohio MUTCD, however I'm having an issue determining the size of the letters.
So I'll get a "Letter size & Series: 4 1/2" D". Now, I get that the 'D' means a 'D series' font. But I don't know how to measure the letter size. The documents don't provide any guidance. How do you you do it?--The Navigators (talk) 12:03, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
- @The Navigators:, there are a few options for road signs that I use. The first and most ideal is some form of construction sheet, like this (which I extracted from an ODOT PDF) or this from an online government repository. Both contain exact dimensions for all the elements of the sign. The other option is that many PDF files contain SVG versions of the sign within them, so even if it is missing the dimensions, you can extract it into Inkscape and still upload the sign. Depending on how old these signs are though, that may not be possible. If the document you are relying on only has raster images and lacks the dimensions, really all you can do is give it your best guess. And when signs use a special font, such as FHWA, it becomes nearly impossible. There are many US road signs I want to upload but I have not been able to get my hands on a true copy of that font so I have had to put them off. If you can show me what sort of documents you are using for these older signs, and whether or not you have the FHWA fonts, I may be able to give you better instructions. Fry1989 eh? 18:50, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
- Here's a page out of the 1967 edition for parking signs, document lacks working drawings, which is amazing given that cities more frequently made their own signs back then. Guess it's going to be trial and error. Good-ish news is most of the signs I want to make aren't overly complex, mostly rectangles with text.
Regarding fonts, someone over at the graphics workshop told me about a webtool for identifying fonts, maybe you've herd of it, maybe not: What The Font. Even if there isn't a digital copy of one of those older fonts you're in search of, it might suggest something that is basically indistinguishable or could be reworked to make signs.

(I'll also leave this link here, it's an archive.org copy of a 1966 edition of Standard Alphabets for Highway Signs Not sure if it's of use to you, but you never know. Also, archive.org has a few documents from Montana's highway department if you're ever in need of older sign documents from that state, along with some other stuff.).--The Navigators (talk) 00:10, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Although I don’t have the means to reverse-engineer a proper font from them, I should be able to extract vector images of individual FHWA characters from the current (2000 series) Alphabets PDF, if that would be any help to either of you.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:50, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- @The Navigators:, so in that document the signs are in raster format, so you can't simply extract them into Inkscape. In that case the only thing I really can suggest is you go based off of the dimensions for the signs in some of the more modern PDFs. But that example leaves me somewhat curious. They appear to have the federal MUTCD designations, most of the states add some sort of personal symbol to their signs, like Texas adds a T to the end (File:Texas W11-25T.svg) an Delaware adds DE to the end (File:Delaware D12-6-DE.svg). So you will want to make sure to differentiate between federal and state signs. That Standard Alphabet PDF is nice, but not really helpful since the letters are all raster. I would love to look at some of the older Montana documents, btw.
- @Odysseus1479:, that would absolutely be helpful and appreciated. Fry1989 eh? 18:36, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- —Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:05, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- BTW the letter images in the recent Alphabets PDF are not raster, but are generated ‘on the fly’ from embedded subsets of the fonts. So the derived paths will be constructed identically to the original glyphs, unlike a vectorization that’s created by tracing raster images.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:47, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- Here's a link to a search at Archive.org that brings back the Montana documents (They're mixed with some irrelevant documents, but the sign ones stand out). As for the sign file naming I'll trail the numbers with "OH" (Ohio) or "PA" (I have a few documents with Pennsylvania road signs from more recently, but also raster.) and the year if there's multiple versions, unless you have a better strategy or standard.--The Navigators (talk) 20:52, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
- @The Navigators:, thank you for that link. As for how we name the files, there is a new standard I have set up and intend to eventually rename all my files to. Because all the federal signs are named "MUTCD..." with the sign number, I named all my California files "MUTCD-CA...". I think it would be good to name the state signs that way with the state abbreviation. Fry1989 eh? 20:32, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

Add superseded regulatory signs to bottom section of /Gallery/Road Signs/United States[edit]
Hey there! First of all, I just want to say that you are doing amazing work categorizing and recreating these road signs. There are actually a few superseded signs you seem to have missed.
R3-2 is the same as R3-1 but "RIGHT" is replaced with "LEFT"
Of course, however, we would need proper, full-quality renders of the signs before such a thing happens. I've heard that you're good at that.
Oh, and as an aside, you're missing the metric version of W12-2, but you still included the construction metric version :P
I appreciate what you do and I hope this helps you out!
Dangeredwolf (talk) 04:54, 1 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Dangeredwolf:, thank you, you're very kind. I do want to upload the older versions of these signs, but I do not have a proper copy of the MUTCD font or construction sheets for these signs. Similar signs were also used in Canada from about the 1950s to the 1980s. They are also on my list, but again I have no construction sheets so they are kind of a guess at best. The images you have uploaded have measurements for the sign itself, but not for the text. As for W12-2, you said I am missing the metric version. Did you mean File:MUTCD W12-2 METRIC.svg? Fry1989 eh? 20:14, 1 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: Yes, that is the sign I was referring to, sorry for the delayed reply, I never received any notifications from Wikipedia that you replied for some reason. Dangeredwolf (talk) 20:04, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Did you get my email with a PDF of one of the alphabets attached? I’ve been awaiting confirmation that you can use it before processing the others the same way.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:01, 4 March 2019 (UTC)
- Yes I received it, thank you. I should have sent back a confirmation. Fry1989 eh? 23:33, 4 March 2019 (UTC)
- No problem, and no rush–I’m just prone to forget about things completely once they’ve been out of my face for a few days. I’ll proceed with extracting the rest of the alphabets; feel free to give me a nudge if you don’t hear back within a week or so.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:20, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

George V flags[edit]
Hi, the flags are the coronation standards of South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. RainbowSilver2ndBackup (talk) 18:04, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Road signs of Namibia[edit]
Hello!
You did a lot of work and excellently painted the SADC traffic sign. Would it be possible for you to draw more specifically for Namibia?
I could upload sketches or photos to each one of them. --Lidhe (talk) 13:24, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
- Hallo Lidhe! I have a PDF of the Namibian Government Gazette from 1997. Most of their traffic signs are identical to SADC. I have uploaded some variations, such as File:SADC road sign IN16-NAM.svg. If you would like to show me what signs for Namibia that are missing, I would be happy to draw them as well. You can email them to me, or upload them and show me here on Commons. Fry1989 eh? 18:48, 22 July 2019 (UTC)
Hello! That's really great.
Here is a link to a pdf. There it is special about the imformation signs. On page 8 and 9 are still one of the characters of the IN series, which are still missing.

- Hi! You were really hardworking. I found a link where the resolution is a lot better. https://documents.pub/document/rtsigns-charts.html --Lidhe
- I see you have already done a lot. Last week, I tried to create svg files. Now I understand what work is behind it. Thanks for that! Here is another link to a file. In this file on page 327 to page 376 is specifically about the tourist traffic signs. I am particularly concerned with the signs of Namibia, which differ in the caption. Unfortunately, the server is currently offline, which contains a pdf file with colored traffic signs. Especially for Namibia (perhaps as -NAM create), there are the characters: GF1, GF2, GF3, GF7, GF8, GF10, GF17, GF18. Can you continue with them? (Please omit the traffic sign GF9, I'm still looking for an example.) --Lidhe (talk) 11:46, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
- Here is a LINK with the symbol of the National Park in Namibia and a LINK with colored tourist signs. --Lidhe (talk) 06:18, 30 July 2019 (UTC)
Great, you almost made the tourist signs. I have already started to create the service signs. Do you continue with the symbols from B1 on?
Here are two characters R530 and R531 which are still missing. Both signs are available in blue-white and white-red. I uploaded a sample for you. The font should be the default road sign font, I have used a different font for the pattern.
The character R326 (so to say R326-NAM) is used in Nambia as a simplified version. Here a link: Bus-Stop in Namibia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lidhe (talk • contribs) 07:27, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hallo :). I do intend to keep uploading all the symbols for tourism and services, and then go back to IN11. I will also upload R530 and R531 some time as well. Fry1989 eh? 15:51, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi! That's great. I saw that you drew the symbol GFS B1-7. There is another symbol for this. The Namibian road sign catalog looks very different (page 382). I found a photo on the internet. --Lidhe (talk) 07:22, 8 August 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, I noticed that as well in the Namibian Gazette PDF, but the image was too low quality for me to use. I am trying to find an SVG version of the SRIN logo, but it is difficult. They do not appear to have a website. Fry1989 eh? 15:52, 8 August 2019 (UTC)

- Can you change a little thing in between? THIS SYMBOL does not exist according to the catalog. More appropriate is THIS VARIANT because there is no symbol. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lidhe (talk • contribs) 13:28, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
- Can you please draw the D1-17 for Namibia as a green character with yellow B1? Many thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lidhe (talk • contribs) 20:01, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
Hi! Do you still remember the following symbols: D1-13, D1-14, D1-15 and D1-16? Many thanks!!
Do you already know what you are doing after the GDLS series? Then I could already prepare something for the page. --Lidhe (talk) 09:29, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi. I will create GFS D1-13 – D1-16 soon. I have a construction sheet for the arrows, but I am not good at math so I have put it off for a little bit. After the GDLS section I intend to do the GDS symbols section, since most of them are similar and it will be fast. After that, I should go back to IN11.XXX :) Fry1989 eh? 16:14, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- Perfect :)
Could you draw the character GL3 in between? For Namibia the village "TSUMEB" is used as pattern in the catalog. The character is to be used for a template, in which currently a fantasy town sign of Windhoek is involved.--Lidhe (talk) 18:20, 20 August 2019 (UTC)- I will work on those signs as well at some point, but they may be difficult. They require a special version of the DIN 1451 typeface called BMOD with bold characters, which I do not have. Fry1989 eh? 18:45, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- Look on THIS side, maybe that helps with the creation.--Lidhe (talk) 19:07, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- Did the link help you?--Lidhe (talk) 14:02, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
- I do have a copy of DIN 1451, but I do not think a digital version of BMOD exists. It was created by South Africa, instead of the Deutsches Institut für Normung. I may have to make the signs using the normal DIN 1451 Engschrift typeface, but they will not look as accurate. Fry1989 eh? 19:04, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Fry1989:Here is a LINK to the page of the "sartsma" for chapter 4 and 5 of the RTSM. There you can see on page 47 the constuction of the signposts, arrows of signposts are on page 56 and a typeface of the font BMOD on page 69. Does this help you?
In Namibia, e.g. only the DIN are used because BMOD has no umlauts. In Nambia, there are towns that contain an ä, ö or ü (such as Lüderitz) and there are only in the DIN 1451. I have already made several patterns of SIGNPOSTS. The font was definitely DIN1451, the letters of the DIN were congruent with the original that I had tested before creating. --Lidhe (talk) 17:26, 22 August 2019 (UTC)

Summary of open SADC traffic signs[edit]

@Fry1989: Status of the list: 19-10-17 --Lidhe (talk) 12:25, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
By now you are really advanced with the IN. Excellent! --Lidhe (talk) 18:40, 16 September 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, they are still on my list. Regarding SADC road sign R325-NAM, that is not an official sign. The Namibian Gazette shows the same design as used in South Africa. But I will try to make the sign and upload it as an unofficial variation. There are still so many signs to make, however, so I will be taking breaks and working on other countries' road signs and other images to avoid fatigue. Thanks :) Fry1989 eh? 19:22, 16 September 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, R352-NAM is not an official traffic sign. The User:Chtrede lives in Namibia and has repeatedly pointed out to me (with pictures) that the official traffic sign is not used. There is only a simplified version. --Lidhe (talk) 12:26, 22 September 2019 (UTC)
- If it is ok for you, I keep the list up to date. I have now inserted the IN11. —-Lidhe (talk) 17:01, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
- Danke, I appreciate that very much. I am taking a bit of a break and am going to work on other countries now, but I will return to SADC. However, I will try to do the ones in your list first. Fry1989 eh? 17:36, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
- Perfekt, vielen Dank! I'm just doing a few little things because at the moment I do not have that much time. That's why it suits you to do something else. —Lidhe (talk) 19:10, 28 September 2019 (UTC)
- I hope that it will not be a problem for you if I enter small "change requests". I also make a pattern in a png-file of what I mean exactly. When you change it does not matter. As you have time and desire. Vielen Dank für die ganze Arbeit :-) --Lidhe (talk) 10:21, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
- For your most recent set of changes, I am unsure if we should procede. Photos show that the backing board can be grey, the same colour as the signs on it, or be optional. The files currently show this variation. Fry1989 eh? 20:04, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
- Sorry, you're absolutely right. It's exactly the same in chapter 2 as you wrote. This has done the change.
I still have a change request to the sign for bus stops. Without a concrete example such as B13, it is incomprehensible. I'm smarter now, B means bus and 13 is the stop number. So all stops in Namibia are numbered in the city. Danke :) --Lidhe (talk) 18:08, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

File:Royal Standard of England (1553–1558).svg[edit]
Ciao, Fry
please can you rename this file File:Royal Standard of England (1553–1558).svg, recently uploaded by me. Reason: year wrong
>>>> ERRATA: 1553; CORRIGE: 1554.
New correct name: "File:Royal Standard of England (1554–1558).svg". See for references: File:Royal Arms of England (1554-1558).svg and date of Mary I Tudor marriage (25 July 1554).
I apologize for my error.
Thank you, ciao, (FDRMRZUSA, talk) 18:41, 11 December 2019 (UTC+1).
About Argentine road signs[edit]
Hello Fry1989. Thanks for having properly categorized the images of Argentine road signs that I have recently uploaded. I have only a couple of question.
Firstly I have seen that you removed the "license review" template and added the "public domain - Argentine road sign": are you sure of this ? According to the template the files that are in public domain are only the ones that are published on the Official Bulletin but the files I have uploaded comes from the Manual de Señalamiento Vertical which it is not a law published on the Official Bulletin but only a publication of Vialidad Nacional and so I am not sure that the template will apply to this signs. Luckily the Manual of Vertical Signs (but not the Manual of Horizontal Signs!) is published under CC-BY 4.0 and so it is ok for Commons.
Secondly I have seen that you have tagged the other Argentine road signs already on Commons as "deprecated". In my opinion it is not totally correct since effectively that files depict the ones that are in the Anexo L which are graphically different from the ones from the Manual (the first one are from 1994-1995 while the second are from 2016-2017 if I am not wrong). It wouldn't be better if we keep them as older version of actual signs ?
Greetings, --Civitas13 (talk) 22:09, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
- Greetings. I am always happy to see another contributor in the field of traffic signs. I am also very happy that you are working on Argentina because that is one that I could not do. I have the 2017 MSV and have had it for a year or two, but the images are all raster and the more complex images lack detailed construction sheets. I do not know how to convert complex images into SVG, so the only signs that I would be able to accurately create would be simple ones such as File:Argentina MSV 2017 road sign R-25.svg or File:Argentina MSV 2017 road sign R-2.svg.
- Regarding licensing, I was uneasy about the license review tag. My fear was that some users/admins that work in licensing and have a more narrow interpretation of copyright would question it. But having seen the source for the Creative Commons license, that is no longer a concern. I added the PD-AR-Signs license for good measure. I would expect the new signs to have been published in a national gazette or bulletin, though it is true we do not know for certain. If you believe we should remove that license, I accept that.
- In regards to the previous drawings that I have marked as depricated, I did so because I considered them low quality and rudimentary, rather than accurate drawings. But we can also remove the deprication tag if you wish.
- One other thing, I have similar documents for Venezuela that I would be happy to send to you, if you would like to work on that after Argentina. They also have raster images without construction sheets, so sadly I can not do that country either. Fry1989 eh? 23:27, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for replying; I think that I will add again the license review template, with not hurry, to be sure 100% not having copyright problems in the future. Just a couple of infos about the drawing of the signs. As you said the image of 2017 MSV are only raster image so the only way (at least for my not so great skills with vector images) to convert in vector file is to make screenshot of 2017 MSV images and retrace patiently them on Inkscape; the great difficult is to reproduce the text and as you can see I haven't uploaded many signs with text since it is very difficult for me to reproduce them. As you can seen I haven't already finished all danger and mandatory signs of Argentina; I think I will do all them in the future but now I have only a few time for drawing images (so for the moment I can't help also with Venezuelan ones, sorry). Regards, --Civitas13 (talk) 08:54, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
House of Plantagenet: new Coats of Arms[edit]
Ciao, Fry
yesterday I uploaded 2 new coats of arms, this:
- File:Coat of Arms of John of Gaunt, First Duke of Lancaster (as claimant King of Castile ) type 2.svg;
- File:Coat of Arms of John of Gaunt, First Duke of Lancaster (as claimant King of Castile ) type 3.svg.
However, as result of fatigue, I made an orthographic mistake, this:
- ERRATA: "Castile )" >>> no blank between Castile and bracket.
PLEASE can you rename 2 files listed above? >>> CORRIGE: "Castile)"
New correct name:
- "File:Coat of Arms of John of Gaunt, First Duke of Lancaster (as claimant King of Castile) type 2.svg";
- "File:Coat of Arms of John of Gaunt, First Duke of Lancaster (as claimant King of Castile) type 3.svg".
I apologize for my error.
Thank you, ciao, (FDRMRZUSA, talk) 16:39, 28 January 2020 (UTC+1).
Ontario Road Signs Wiki gallery page.[edit]
Hi Fry: How are you? Though it took me a heck of a time to get the hang of this whole WikiMedia, but you bet I am very SUPER-GRATEFUL of your Ontario Road Signs gallery, yet I live in Toronto. I too am awfully loyal, since my high school years, to MTO traffic personnel, and have done lots of research of certain publications, from map panels to manuals.
If ever possible, I really want to help contribute, to help you further add to your galleries with AI/PDF copies of MTO MSL files. I could E-mail attach files for you, that you'd be here-and-there surprised how seriously I've made some in-depth dents, not to mention the changes through DHO-thru-MTO era times. Thanks ahead, yet we'll see from there... :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by JamieMalecki (talk • contribs) 17:18, 9 May 2020 (UTC)
WOT flags[edit]
Hello, and sorry for the intrusion, but given your work with flags on WC, I was wondering if you'd be willing to help with the creation of an SVG File for a certain flag described within The Wheel of Time novel series, and the alteration of another already existing File from the same series? Because I do genuinely think these two particular flags would be simple enough to create/alter in SVG from, even though I'm no expert on art. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 17:34, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
- Sure, what information do you have describing them? Fry1989 eh? 17:59, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: Thanks for replying.
- Well, the flag that needs altering is this one here, namely the "Flag of Tear". I'd like to request for the size dimensions of it to be altered so that it matches those of the previous version of the File, but without changing the new order of the colours. I know it's a very minor thing, but it would bring said flag more into line with the sizes of the other WOT flags that already exist on WC, as seen here.
- And the flag that needs creating is the "Flag of House Trakand" which is described in the novels as consisting of a "silver keystone" on a "blue" field. You can see a coat of arms version here, which of course the flag is the same as (although there's probably no need for the black border around the keystone).
- Thoughts? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 19:28, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Snow Lion Fenian:, as requested. File:Flag of House Trakand.svg. Fry1989 eh? 23:54, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: That's terrific work you've done on both Files, and thank you for your help. Very much appreciated. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 10:30, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
@Fry1989: Hello again, and once again sorry for intruding, but since you helped me out with those two WOT flags a few months ago (and thanks again for that by the way), I was wondering if you'd be willing to create SVG files of another two flags from the same series? Because, again, I don't think these particular two flags would be that hard to create for someone with art experience, though I could be wrong. But I hope you don't mind me bringing up the subject anyway? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 11:53, 11 August 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: Thanks for replying. Well the first flag in question is the "Flag of House Mitsobar", which is described as consisting of "a green anchor and sword, crossed" (in the Glossary of A Crown of Swords) and also with a "white" background (in Chapter 1 of The Path of Daggers). This image here (which appears as a chapter icon within the WOT novels) should provide an idea of the formation of the anchor-and-sword emblem. Now, if you do decide to do this, I'd recommend using the anchor and sword templates provided below (large in part because those particular templates were created by the same artist, so it might provide a sense of consistency, if you will).
- And the second flag is the "Personal flag of Elayne Trakand". This is described in Chapter 32 of Knife of Dreams as consisting of a "Golden Lily" on a "blue" field. Now, if you do decide to do this one, I'd recommend using one of the lilies provided in the template below (specifically the one sticking out of the left side of the stem, as I do think it would suit best).
- And, of course, if you do decide to do these, I'd also ask that the flags be kept within the same kind of size dimensions as the others in the WOT Category, as most of them all already roughly the same size anyway.

- @Fry1989: Thanks so much for doing those files, terrific work on both fronts, and sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Much appreciated as always. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 19:59, 15 August 2020 (UTC)
@Fry1989: Hello again, and sorry for the bother, but I was wondering if you'd be willing to create another two SVG files of flags from the WOT series (and thanks again for your help in this field before). Because, again, I don't think these ones would be that difficult for someone with artistic experience. But I could be wrong. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 21:13, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Snow Lion Fenian:, sure, I can take a look and maybe give it another try. Fry1989 eh? 18:25, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: Thanks for replying. Well, the first flag in question is the "Personal flag of Mattin Stepaneos den Balgar", which is specifically described in Lord of Chaos Chapter 9 as consisting of three silver leopards on a black field. Now, if you do decide to do this, I'd probably recommend using the leopard in the arms provided below, as it seems rather ideal for use in this case. Unless of course you know of a more ideal SVG leopard available. But of course that's only if you do decide to do this.
- And the the second flag in question is the "Flag of the Panarch of Tarabon", which is specifically described in Chapter 30 of The World of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time as being effectively the same as the actual flag of the nation of Tarabon (below), but with a green staff added behind the tree. Now, since there's no actual description of exactly what position the staff is displayed in behind the tree, I'd probably say that it be put in a diagonal position (and facing to the upper-right), as it seems practical in this case. And, if you do decide to take this on, I'd recommend using the staff from the arms provided below.
- And, as with previous requests, if you do end up doing these files, I'd ask that the flags be kept within the same kind of size dimensions as the others in the WOT Category.
- Thoughts? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 15:23, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Snow Lion Fenian:, done. I am not quite happy with the one with the leopards, but do not know how to make it better. Fry1989 eh? 16:44, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: No bother at all, what you've done is already terrific work. And thanks once again for taking the time to help out here, I do appreciate it a lot. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 00:21, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
@Fry1989: Hello again, and sorry for coming back so relatively soon after the last one, but I was wondering if you'd be willing to create another three (or at least as much of them as possible) TWOT related flags? It would definitely be a great help, as I'm doing my best to have most of the known flags from that series created over the next few weeks or so. But of course I'd understand if you can't. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 14:48, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
- I can take another look, but it will be a little while. My brain seems to be running on slow today. Fry1989 eh? 18:00, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: That's okay, and thanks for replying. Well, the particular three flags I had in mind are:
- 1) The "Flag of Far Madding", which is described in The Wheel of Time Companion, as "a blue field divided vertically in the center by an elongated red oval of even dimensions" with "a woman’s golden hand which was open, fingers up... on the side nearest the flagstaff" and "a golden sword, a simple straight blade and cross quillons, point upward... on the outer end of the flag." If you decide to do this, I've provided templates for the hand, oval shape and sword below.
- 2) The "Flag of House Caeren", which is described in Chapter 33 of Knife of Dreams as consisting of "a red star and silver sword" on a "black" background. You can see a coat of arms version here, and if you do end up taking this on, I'd recommend using the star template below. And regarding the sword, I'm sure one of the curved-bladed ones in this Category here would suffice for it, whichever you think is best, as I can't really decide myself.
- 3) The "Red Wolfhead Banner", which is described in Chapter 42 of The Shadow Rising, as consisting of a "red-bordered white banner... displaying a red wolf's head." An impression of the Banner can be seen as part of this illustration here. Now, if you do decide to do this, I'd recommend using the wolf's head provided in the image below. And, even though it's rather trivial, I'd also request that the file's title be spelt with capitals for the first letters in all three words, as that's how the flag's name is spelt in the novels themselves (as you can see on the Wiki page for it here).
- And, of course, if you do take this on, I'd also ask for the flags to be created in the same size as you did the other ones.
- Thoughts? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 23:59, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
@Fry1989: Superbly done as usual on all three fronts, and thanks so much for taking the time to work on these.
Though just one or two things; regarding the FM flag, perhaps the oval could be extended so that it touches the exact top and bottom of the flag (but without cutting off the oval's curves)? If only because the description states the flag is divided in the centre by the oval, which I've always taken to mean that the oval stretches the whole way across. But maybe I'm wrong. And, if the oval is enlarged, the hand and sword would probably have to be moved so that they're the same distance from the oval as they are now.
And, regarding the Caeren flag, is there any chance of the sword being given a more silvery hue? It just seems more white-ish in its current form.
But no offence at all, what you've done is still terrific work. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 23:46, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: That's great, and thanks again for your help. I do appreciate it. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 00:19, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
@Fry1989: Hello (and sorry) again. I was wondering if you'd be willing to assist in the creation of another five (or at least as much of them as possible) TWOT-related flags for WC, as part of my plan of trying to have most of the flags from that series created over the space of a few weeks? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 20:44, 4 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Snow Lion Fenian: You can post them here but I don't know when I will get to them, and you may want to ask others. Fry1989 eh? 20:03, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: No worries, that's fine. The ones I had in mind were:
- 1) The "Personal flag of Gawyn Trakand", which is described in The Wheel of Time Companion as "a charging white boar on the red field of Andor." If you do this, I've provided a charging boar template below, as well as the national flag of Andor itself, which displays the same shade of red as this one should.
- 2) The "Personal flag of Agelmar Jagad", which is described in The Wheel of Time Companion as "three running red foxes on a field quartered blue and white." I've provided an image containing a running fox below, if you do decide to try it, and I'd also ask that the blue be put in the first quarter.
- 3) The "Flag of House Norwelyn", which is described in The Wheel of Time Companion, as "a leaping silver salmon on a field of vertical blue and green stripes." If you end up doing this, I've provided an image containing a salmon below for use as a template. And I'd also recommend having the flag consist of five stripes (with the far left one being blue), if it's okay.
- 4) The "Flag of House Pendar", which is described in The Wheel of Time Companion as consisting of "three six-pointed golden stars, one above and two below, on a field of seven vertical red and white stripes." If you take this on, I'd recommend making the far-left stripe red, and also that this particular shade of red be used, if it's convenient.
- 5) The "Flag of House Anshar", which is described in The Wheel of Time Companion as "a running red fox on a field of gold or yellow." If you decide to try it, I've provided another image containing a running fox below for use.
- And, as usual, I would recommend keeping them within the same size dimensions as the previous ones, if you do do them that is. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 21:10, 6 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: Great work on all files as usual, and thanks again for all your hard work. Much appreciated. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 19:55, 11 December 2020 (UTC)
@Fry1989: Hello again, so I wanted to inquire if you'd be willing to create SVG files of another two WOT flags? Obviously it's okay if you aren't, but I'm sure you'd be relieved at the fact that there's only two of them in this particular request? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 10:18, 18 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Snow Lion Fenian: You may post them, but I will be a bit slow getting to them. Fry1989 eh? 18:07, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: That's perfectly fine. The flags in question are:
- 1) The "Flag of House Baryn", which is described in The Wheel of Time Companion as consisting of "a silver winged hammer on a field of green." If you do this, I'd recommend using the templates provided below (but with the hammer flipped horizontally, if that's okay). The shape of the winged hammer emblem can be seen in this COA rendition here, but as you can see, it uses the wrong colours (blue, black and silver), which I'd assume would be because that image dates from before the Companion book was released in 2015, which of course gives the correct colours (green and silver). But the shape itself seems fine.
- 2) The "Personal flag of Ingtar Shinowa", which is described in Chapter 46 of The Eye of the World, as "yellow... bearing a gray owl". Should you do this, I've provided an owl template for use below. And on that note, I'd recommend using a dark grey shade for the bulk of the owl, but a light shade of grey for the beak, claws and eye rings. Whichever two shades contrast best with each other in your own opinion.
- Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 20:42, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: Superb flags as always, and thanks again. And before I go, I was wondering if I could inquire about the possible alteration of a certain already-existing WOT flag file on WC (not any of the ones you've done, mind you), as I feel that this particular one could do with being modified? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 21:43, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Snow Lion Fenian: Sure, go ahead. Fry1989 eh? 23:49, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: Thanks. The file in question is the Flag of Seanchan (below). What I had in mind for it was for to be modified to replace the 3D-looking lightning bolts with new 2D ones instead. As I do think that the 3D bolts look out of place with the 2D hawk.
- And I was also thinking the formation of the three silver bolts should be changed as well, to make it look more like they're actually being held in the hawk's (lower) claw. Perhaps one pointing straight down from the claw, and one down-left, and one down-right?
- (and full disclosure: I'm the one who requested the creation of the Seanchan flag for WC, over a year ago, although I never actually specified which lightning bolts the artist should use. So while it seemed fine at the time, in hindsight, I do think an improvement could be made. And the original artist seems to have vanished from WP, so asking them appears to be out of the question.)
- Thoughts? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 14:57, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
- @Snow Lion Fenian: I am sorry for the delayed response. I have been in a bit of a funk lately. I am afraid this one seems a little too tricky for me, so I will need to decline at this time. Fry1989 eh? 17:36, 28 December 2020 (UTC)

@Fry1989: Hey, I was wondering if you'd be able to take on another two particular requests in this category? I do think you'd find these two files to be relatively easy to do. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 21:43, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Snow Lion Fenian: Alright. Fry1989 eh? 17:50, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: Thanks. The two files in question are:
- 1) The "Con of Talmanes Delovinde", which is described in Chapter 43 of The Fires of Heaven as consisting of three yellow stars on blue, as seen here.
- 2) The "Con of Dobraine Taborwin", which is described in Chapter 54 of Lord of Chaos as consisting of two white diamonds on blue, as seen here.
- If you're wondering, a "Con" is certain type of flag assigned to certain people with the WOT universe, but not the same as a "Personal flag", which is a separate concept in this case. And if you do end up doing these, I would ask for them to be kept square-shaped, as seen in the links. Thoughts? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 19:35, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
- I will make them tomorrow. Fry1989 eh? 01:18, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: Nicely done on both files, and thanks. Although is there any chance that both flags could be made square shaped? I know most of the flag files within the WOT category aren't shaped as such, but square does seem to be the usual shape for Con in particular. But no offence. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 18:30, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

@Fry1989: Hello again. I know it's been a while, but I just wanted to inquire if you'd be able to assist in the creation of another certain WOT-related flag, as well as in the modification of another already existing one? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 18:36, 22 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Snow Lion Fenian: I'll see what I can do. Fry1989 eh? 18:34, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: Thanks for replying.
- 1) The flag that needs creating is the "Flag of House Bashere", which is described in Chapter 41 of A Crown of Swords as being "three simple red blossoms on a field of blue", with the flowers specifically stated to be "kingspenny" blossoms (a fictional flower from the WOT universe, as seen below). If you end up taking this on, I'd recommend using this particular shade of Ice blue here. Also, since there's no exact description as to what formation the three flowers are displayed in on the flag, I'd ask for them to be arranged in a horizontal line across the centre. And, of course, I would request for the flag to be kept within the 3:5 ratio, as per usual.
- 2) The flag that needs modifying is the Flag of the Children of the Light, displayed below. I'd like for the flag be changed so that a thin gold border is placed on all sides of it, preferably the same shade of gold as the sun itself (as the flag of the Children is specifically described in Chapter 25 of The World of Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time as being "edged with gold"). If you do this, I'd recommend making the border the same size as that from the flag of the Band of the Red Hand below, another WOT flag.
- Thoughts? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 13:39, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: Superb job, and thanks for your help on both Files. Although, regarding the Children of the Light flag, is there any chance that the Sun on it could be slightly reduced in size, so that the outermost rays of the Sun are the same distance from the inner edges of the surrounding gold border as they were from the edges of the white field in the previous version of the File? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 01:52, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

Emblem of Afghanistan[edit]
I have seen File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg and back in 2015 you reverted someone's revision because it's not true SVG. That is correct however this one with "true" SVG is officially the old version of the Afghan emblem which was modified by the country in 2013 into what the other user made (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/1/1e/20150515212909%21Emblem_of_Afghanistan.svg). I don't know how SVGs work but is it possible for this image to be converted into a true SVG? Because after all the current file uses an officially outdated version of the country's emblem. --Weaveravel (talk) 19:55, 12 June 2020 (UTC)
- The updated version was eventually created by User:Sodacan, in two versions.
- File:National emblem of Afghanistan.svg
- File:National emblem of Afghanistan (Black).svg
- File:National emblem of Afghanistan (Gold).svg (a gold alteration I made upon request)
- Fry1989 eh? 22:36, 12 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: Thanks. That's good. However there are lots of articles on cross-language Wikipedia that use the File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg file, it's going to be very difficult and very long to update every single article/template on English Wikipedia let alone other languages. Wouldn't it be a good idea to copy File:National emblem of Afghanistan.svg to File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg, and then use the older emblem version in a new file called File:Emblem of Afghanistan 2001-2013.svg ? This way the image would get updated everywhere globally on articles that use it (but I'm also afraid that it may wrongfully change on articles that are supposed to use the older emblem, how can we get around this potential problem? - one example I've found is the Emblem of Afghanistan article on Wikipedia ). --Weaveravel (talk) 18:02, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
- Overwriting the file would probably conflict with COM:Overwrite, as it is a historical version. And as you mention, that would conflict where the historical version is supposed to be used. Manual replacement is not fun, but probably the best option. I can help with that a bit. Fry1989 eh? 19:30, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
- I have made the manual replacements on the master articles. Fry1989 eh? 20:26, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. Can you list which master articles? So that I know what's been done and I can attempt to update what's left. I have just updated the image on Template:Foreign relations of Afghanistan. There's going to be many articles to update unfortunately (every province template too for example) and yes it's not fun but there's no choice. --Weaveravel ({{int:Talkpagelinktext} em where appropriate can now be done. - @Weaveravel: the main article page for Afghanistan and Emblem of Afghanistan on the various different language projects, except for one where some local user thinks the other version "looks better" so they're being stubborn. Also the Politics of Afghanistan sidebar. Fry1989 eh? 23:22, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: OK. I have realized something, that perhaps the older 2004-2013 emblem is not meant to be used purposefully in the vast majority of articles. In my view, only very few articles will actually use the old emblem, most notably Emblem of Afghanistan to show the historic emblem. If you look at the global file usage, that file is used in lots of articles of Afghan places, politics, templates, etc. that aren't meant to demonstrate something historic. I have also discovered that File:Coat of arms of Afghanistan.svg is used in many global pages, which redirects to the old emblem.
- I therefore think we can try solve this by doing this:
- 1) Copy the current old emblem from File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg into a new file called File:Emblem of Afghanistan (2004-2013).svg
- 2) Replace the current old emblem revision at File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg with the new emblem file from File:National emblem of Afghanistan.svg
- 3) Redirect File:National emblem of Afghanistan.svg to File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg (pointless duplicate)
- 4) In Emblem of Afghanistan Wikipedia page and in other languages, (and any other articles if necessary where the old emblem is meant to be used) replace the File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg file (which should now show the new 2013 emblem) with File:Emblem of Afghanistan (2004-2013).svg.

- What do you think of this plan? I think it's very good to solve this problem easily for Wikipedia globally, and like I said virtually all articles aren't purposefully meant to use the old emblem. --Weaveravel (talk) 12:38, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Weaveravel:, I can rename the file. There will be a period of time where CommonsDelinker and GlobalReplace need to replace the old file name with the new one, and then after that we can work on further manual replacements of the old emblem with the 2013 emblem where appropriate. Fry1989 eh? 16:28, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: Let me know please which file you're renaming and when manual editing can begin. --Weaveravel (talk) 13:42, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Weaveravel:, I have renamed File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg to File:Emblem of Afghanistan (2004–2013).svg. I have ran GlobalReplace to replace the file name wherever possible, and believe that manual replacement of "Emblem of Afghanistan (2004–2013).svg" with the current emblem where appropriate can now be done. Fry1989 eh? 16:21, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: Thanks. I have no idea about how to use bots that automatically do this things so thanks. Is it OK now if I can now copy File:National emblem of Afghanistan.svg to File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg? Or are only you allowed to perform it? --Weaveravel (talk) 16:57, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Weaveravel:, File:National emblem of Afghanistan.svg cannot be renamed to File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg because that file name is still used in a lot of instances which GlobalReplace was not able to update the change when I renamed the file. We will need to go through the global usage list and manually replace it with File:National emblem of Afghanistan.svg. Fry1989 eh? 18:30, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: What I actually meant is 1) redirecting File:National emblem of Afghanistan.svg to File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg, 2) remove the current redirect of File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg and upload the new emblem revision to this file. This will mean that everywhere with File:Emblem of Afghanistan.svg globally will make use of the new emblem, and only in the few cases with manual intervention we can change it to File:Emblem of Afghanistan (2004–2013).svg. --Weaveravel (talk) 20:23, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

- @Fry1989: Let me know please which file you're renaming and when manual editing can begin. --Weaveravel (talk) 13:42, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
- What do you think of this plan? I think it's very good to solve this problem easily for Wikipedia globally, and like I said virtually all articles aren't purposefully meant to use the old emblem. --Weaveravel (talk) 12:38, 15 June 2020 (UTC)
- COM:CROP would not apply here as the file shows a stub which never existed in reality. Beginning with the faulty extraction from the flag, the patchy image was missing the "black" layer. All following versions are also wrong as the mistake was never corrected. You see the proper version here. - MaxxL - talk 20:34, 14 June 2020 (UTC)
- Sodacan's uploads are the most accurate, but there is now a discrepency between File:National emblem of Afghanistan.svg and File:National emblem of Afghanistan (Black).svg from when S Group Coop changed the first image from gold to black. The years in Arabic characters under the mosque use two different characters. Also the rising sun and Arabic words above the dome have swapped places. Fry1989 eh? 20:49, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Small modification to two Australia-NSW road signs[edit]
Hello. I have noticed a small error in two NSW road signs, R4-235 and R4-235-1. The non-standard school operating hours should be in red, not black. See this instance of R4-235 for what I mean. Thanks --DL6443 03:44, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- @DL6443:, interesting. I could swear it wasn't like that at the time I made the signs. TfNSW's website and PDFs are silent on the colour of the text, but do show the hours in a red broken border. Do you know if this is a new regulation? Fry1989 eh? 15:52, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: I don't know about that one. Every instance of R4-235 I have seen on the road has the hours in red. The particular sign in the link above has been like that with red hours since at least 2013. --DL6443 23:36, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

Bhutan Air Arm roundel[edit]
Thank you for telling me about the alleged hoax roundels. The File:Bhutan roundel.png I drew 10 years ago doesn't have its source in a dodgy site. It is from an authoritative book: Jane's Aircraft Recognition Guide Fifth Edition. ISBN 978-0-06-134619-4 (in the US), page 522. Please forgive me for the delay in replying, I was not sure where I had stored that book and it has taken me a while to find it. Xufanc (talk) 15:08, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you for your response. I have no access to Jane's or C&M, and my knowledge is based mainly on photographic evidence. I hold no prejudice to the uploaders of the various images including yourself and am open to the possibility that some of them may be correct. Fry1989 eh? 15:23, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
- If you wish I can send you a scan of the page showing the roundel via email. Regarding the air force this is what I found: The Bhutan Air Arm has no combat capabilities, and is used entirely for transport. India is the key supplier... Existing aircraft in Bhutan are Mil Mi-8 helicopters, Dornier/HAL 228, Beechcraft 200 and Pilatus PC-12... Xufanc (talk) 16:08, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
1981 UK traffic signs..[edit]
As traffic signs are partly your area... I thought you might be interested...
However, the scans of the diagrams here are in black and white, You don't happen to have color equivalents with the measurements on them? (Currently they've been patched using SVG versions as the diagrams are broadly the same as in later versions.)
(Aside: Getting a color scan of the 1964, 1975 and 1981 regulations on Commons would be awesome, Someone already uploaded a large set of images for the 1964 versions over on SABRE's wiki.) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:31, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
- The UK is a country I would like to work on, but it is a bit tricky since I am a perfectionist and the best quality diagrams made for use by actual sign production companies are under a paywall which I could never afford. It didn't used to be, so I think that's a rather nasty thing of them to do. That limits me to shapes I can actually draw myself, such as the crossroads sign. The warning sign for sheep on the other hand, I need to be able to download a drawing of the sheep symbol, and the versions in these publications are acceptable but not as good as they could be. Anything with words is also difficult because I do not have a proper copy of the Transport typeface.
- In regards to measurements and colours, I would expect that those have remained constant since the inception of the TSRGD. Fry1989 eh? 15:51, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
- You have access to the working drawings on gov.uk (https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/traffic-signs-signals-and-road-markings#traffic-signs-images-and-drawings) (which are NOT paywalled)? In many instances older (and recent worded signs) can be drawn, with selection of a nominal x-height, and interpolation of the rules in Chapter 7 of the TSM (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/traffic-signs-manual).
See also: Category:Traffic Signs Manual (UK) and Category:Working Drawings for Traffic Signs in the United Kingdom. The Wayback machine has a reasonably full archive of the previous dft.gov versions from 2002.
The Transport typeface tiles are in a PDF working drawing. If you have inkscape and some patience they can be extracted from the PDF - ( This is essentially How I made - File:UK traffic sign 534.1(1981).svg by scaling the releavtn vectors from an OGL covered PDF. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 12:01, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
- I didn't do them as text, but as the tiles directly :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 12:10, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
- I'd be interested to know if the tsgrd.co.uk site has actual CAD drawings, or if what it's doing is just representing material that's already in TSGRD and TSM (and thus only linking to material that's already existing.) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:31, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
@Fry1989: The Sheep is S11 - See here - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/traffic-signs-working-drawings-tsrgd-2002, for a full set of S drawings. Shouldn't be too hard for someone to pull them out in Inkscape and scale them accordingly. :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:44, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, I do have access to the working drawings and do still intend to use them in the future, it's just that the TSRGD web-app's drawings are superior. I do not recall if they have CAD drawings as well, as it has been several years since they put up the paywall. I would also like to work on the Welsh-language versions and thankfully the Welsh Government also has provided a list of working drawings, but again that is a bit of a struggle because of the Transport typeface. I find it a bit confusing because it is based on x-height, which I can't seem to quite wrap my head around. Most files for signs with words also do not have the letters properly encapsulated. New Zealand, which I am currently working on, makes it much more simple. They describe the overall height of the wording, and the text is encapsulated well so I only need to make very minor adjustments. Fry1989 eh? 17:33, 20 November 2020 (UTC)
- There's a PDF of the adaptations made to Transport for the Welsh letters (see https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/working_drawings_for_traffic_sig) It's scans rather than digital though, so you'd have to redraw the glyphs manually. Do you have wikimedia e-mail enabled?, I might have a figure I draw on how to possibly make some of them. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:30, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
- I will also note - Category:Traffic_Signs_Manual_(UK)_(Chapter_4) and related which has the actual diagrams, in many instances all that needs doing is the clipping of the text caption from the bottom.
I also found [6] which was a consultation document for the 2002 era TSGRD. If you can get permission (or confirmation of OGL from the Department of Transport directly) for it's use, it should be feasible to pull at least some of the relevant diagrams out of the PDF directly. (Assuming they are not already present in the TSM images). Diagrams not directly in the set would of course need to be made up, but adapting from existing artwork is perhaps easier than starting completely from scratch. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:43, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00:, yes I do have Wiki email enabled. The Welsh Government's list of working drawings is currently located here, btw. Fry1989 eh? 22:04, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
Traffic Sign DR's..[edit]
You got the notifications because you edited these last, The reason for the DR's is to do with accuracy concerns about the x-height, scaling and spacing rules. I can sometimes be a perfectionist as well. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 00:50, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00:, whilst I don't mind the deletion of File:UK traffic sign 511(1981).svg since we have other drawings of this sign, I would oppose the deletion of the other three if there are not other drawings of them, despite any inaccuracies. Fry1989 eh? 17:32, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
- Noted. The other context is F%C3%A6's comment in User_talk:Fæ#Traffic_Signs...., as the relevant working drawings do not necessarily say OGL in the document, and so far it's been taken on good faith that they were based on the source. My most recent attempt to get a proper OTRS for this wasn't successful.ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:01, 21 November 2020 (UTC)
- You are of course more than welcome to make your own enquiries, Don't bother asking the DfT contacts about anything about UK traffic signs prior to 2002 though, they claimed they didn't hold any information that old when I asked them about 5 years ago, and it is unlikely they would have done subsequently. File:AU-NSW school zone 30.svg[edit]
Hi. Per this link, it appears that the 30 km/h school zone sign used in Manly and Liverpool is numbered R4-230-1-2N. If it is possible, I believe the title should be changed to "File:AU-NSW road sign R4-230-1" or "File:AU-NSW road sign R4-230-1-2N".
On a different note, however, the colour of the "SCHOOL ZONE" title bar should be the same as R4-235, not the dark orangey-red it currently is. An instance of the sign in question on the road can be found here.
Thanks and Happy New Year from DL6443 23:30, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- Now that the 30 Zone versions have been standardised and published on the TfNSW website, I will make the appropriate changes in the coming days. Happy New Year to you as well. Fry1989 eh? 01:18, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
- Oh, weird. Every instance of the sign I've seen has the orange title bar, not the yellow-green one on TfNSW's website. See two examples of signs I've personally seen while driving on the road in Manly and Liverpool. Again, I don't know what the actual regulation is here, I'm just offering my opinion here. Cheers DL6443 21:20, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

Angolan air force roundel[edit]
I'm working on a thing on Air Forces at the moment (not on Wikipedia) and I'm trying to track down the history of the Angolan roundel.
The one currently showing on the Angolan AF page is a version I'd not seen before - the black and red yin-yang with a yellow border.
The site you gave as a source (http://www.drareg.nl/Markeringen/ukusa/index.html) seems to have a dead link for the period 2011-2019, so I assume that's what was current given you made the image in 2017 - it looks like there's a new one with the national cog-wheel-and-machete image in the centre from 2019 onwards. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any way of contacting the chap to let him know there's a dead link.
Pretty much every other source I'd usually go to for this kind of thing hasn't been updated since before 2011, and details on African air froces are notoriously difficult to come by, so your roundel appears to be literally the only internet source for that particular version right now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Brickie (talk • contribs) 12:49, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
So, uh, yeah. Possibly want to make the new one if you've got time at any point, though it seems like the web at large doesn't really care that much about the insignia of the Angolan Air Force...
--Brickie (talk) 12:50, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Brickie: I was able to find a photo, and I believe this is one of the ones that was used on Drareg.nl, though I haven't checked it in a while. If you have a Facebook account, there is a group called Roundels of the World Air Forces which I would suggest joining, and it is run by the same person that has that website. I'll also try to make the new one. Fry1989 eh? 16:34, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
- Cheers for the swift response. Ugh, I theoretically have Facebook but stopped actually using it a looong time ago. Perhaps I'll just lurk on incognito mode or something :)
- It's not that I didn't believe you about the 2011-19 roundel, btw, I just thought it was interesting the way that these thigns go.

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Commons[edit]
Hi,
Hope you are well. I have seen that you have recently active in Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems. This page is currently the only page where user problems (conduct issues, and other unacceptable behavior, etc.) get reported.
I am working on facilitating the Universal Code of Conduct enforcement discussion on Commons which focuses users’ conduct. That is why I am inviting to participate in the discussion to give your valuable opinion.
You can do so by participating in the public on-wiki discussion on Commons: Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. There are a few questions regarding enforcement you can answer. Please feel free to include anything you find relevant.
I also encourage you to participate in the survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeK7gTSZ2PSNiekEKPcC2UvnkJaQt8iVPWRXZbk27U9E8fOIQ/viewform
The survey has a different set of questions, and you can response to them anonymously. It is not a long survey and should take around 10 minutes to complete.
I want you to know that your input is very valuable and it will help to us better shape the UCoC enforcement pathways for our beloved Commons community. I hope you participate. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 08:34, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

"<VERB/NOUN> prohibition signs" or "No <VERB/NOUN> signs"?[edit]
Per this edit, do you plan on harmonizing all prohibition sign names with the "<VERB/NOUN> prohibition signs" formulation instead of "No <VERB/NOUN> signs"? I don't have a strong preference for either one; I simply noticed while trying to move Parking prohibition signs to No parking signs in order to make it match other categories under by prohibited action and by prohibited object, and I want to make sure we are as consistent as possible. —Iketsi (talk) 20:30, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Iketsi: I have been struggling a bit with the proper grammatical order for these categories. "No <VERB/NOUN> signs" works well with certain topics, such as No Parking signs, but it doesn't work as well for more complex restrictions, such as where vehicles are prohibited by their weight. "No vehicles by axle weight signs / No vehicles signs by axle weight" doesn't sound quite right, whereas "Axle weight prohibition signs" sounds better. I do believe there should be some form of standardisation, and placing the subject before the action seems to work better to me. But I am willing to let others form a consensus on what way is the right way, if you feel there should be a discussion about it. Fry1989 eh? 00:07, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Iketsi: @Fry1989: I don't have strong feelings about this. In the process of searching for categories re. File:Genève-Servette HC-01.jpg, it seemed enriching to add the unusual Category:No fireworks signs , Category:No kick scooters signs and Category:No umbrellas signs. May be regarding the Category:Prohibition signs by prohibited object, the formulation "No <NOUN> signs" is better, straightforward? I'm happy with any improvements in consistency - and easy understanding of the logic for newcomers. --MHM (talk) 08:01, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
- @MHM55: @Fry1989: We should certainly make sure that a "No <VERB/NOUN> signs" redirect exists for every category of this kind. Another advantage of "<VERB/NOUN> prohibition signs" is that it will be suggested when searching for "X prohibit..." (when thinking about either "prohibition" or "prohibited"). I say let's give it a try, and we'll see how it goes. —Iketsi (talk) 12:23, 6 April 2021 (UTC)

- @Fred M. Jimmy: Thank you, I needed a brief break from my extensive work on New Zealand. Unfortunately, my copy of the Arahan Teknik Jalan is very old and does not contain all of the traffic signs. Also, some are too complex for me to draw. But I will upload the signs that I am able to. If you do know of any newer versions of the Arahan Teknik Jalan that are publicly available, I would be very grateful to view them. I will continue searching as well. Hello, can you please update this file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag-map_of_Artsakh.svg so that it is up to date with the new borders of Artsakh? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ministar Nesigurnosti (talk • contribs) 17:43, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Ministar Nesigurnosti: I am sorry but I have to decline. I will not become involved in the disputed borders. Fry1989 eh? 17:56, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

- @ColorfulSmoke: That would be nearly identical to File:Flag of Mexico (1916-1934).svg. I am uncertain about this rename. Fry1989 eh? 17:59, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Ugandan road signs[edit]
I found the perfect source for some Ugandan road signs. Here: Ugandan Road signs — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kingwarnen (talk • contribs) 11:42, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
Also, Did you forget that you need to put categories for the Ugandan road signs? You should do it. Kingwarnen (talk) 02:14, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Kingwarnen: I believe I have, or do you also mean the ones uploaded by มองโกเลีย๔๔? And whilst I know you had good intentions in creating User:Fry1989/Gallery/Road Signs/Uganda, I am not in a position to upload all of the Ugandan signs at this time. I also prefer not to include images by other users, unless I have altered them myself. Fry1989 eh? 15:38, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: Jeez, all I wanted is you to add all the Ugandan road signs, as well as the categories added to them. Kingwarnen (talk) 23:02, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- I would like you to help me with the Ugandan road signs. It doesn't matter which source is which. I'm a professional. Kingwarnen (talk) 00:23, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Kingwarnen: I would like to upload all the Ugandan signs at some point. However, most of them appear to be derived from signs in the United Kingdom. I would like to do both together. In order to do that, I will need to purchase a TSRGD license which is £470, and for signs with words I will need to purchase the Transport typeface which is another £400. I plan on doing so, but I can't quite yet.
- On another note, I am very happy to see you uploading signs as well. However, I have to ask about your sourcing for a few of them. File:Uganda road sign R00.svg does not appear in the manual that you shared with me, nor in the copy of the Highway Code that I have. File:2.5 Georgian road sign.svg does not appear on this Georgian Government website. I am also uncertain about File:Mauritius Road Signs - Warning Sign - Checkpoint.svg, File:Mauritius Road Signs - Warning Sign - Drawbridge.svg, and File:Mauritius Road Signs - Regulatory Sign - Priority road.svg. Fry1989 eh? 16:30, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: These Ugandan road signs that need sources as you mentioned are ones that are custom and should be used in the next version of the manual, I hope. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kingwarnen (talk • contribs) 17:41, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Kingwarnen: I want to be friendly with you and work with you where possible, but we need to have reliability with our images. That means we can't upload fake signs, or fill in the holes by presuming what signs are missing as is the case with the Ugandan Traffic Signs Manual.

- Please understand that this is not an attack on you. Most of your images appear to be either true or highly probable. For example, File:Hungary road sign B-002 (old).svg is not sourced, but since almost all of Europe used the circle & triangle design of STOP sign at one time, I would think it very, very likely that Hungary did too. But the signs that I have listed above, based on my experience and knowledge, are more suspect. Please help me, by verifying these signs and deleting the ones which can not be verified. Fry1989 eh? 17:26, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: You're kidding. Reliability? Is that all Wikipedia wants? All I did is uploaded the signs and now you want to help me to get rid of them? I'm worked my butt off so hard on these signs that need to be added in the future manual. I know it's not attacking but you're just ditching them off.
- The signs you mentioned above are from the new Portuguese road signs manual in Portugal so look it up if you can.

- These road signs are from Mauritius shown above. There's ways to put catgories of them like I did, not to delete them. --Kingwarnen (talk) 17:50, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Kingwarnen: All I am asking is that the signs be verified. Thankfully, I have found a source for the Portuguese signs. In regards to Mauritius, I have had significant trouble finding sources of any sort, even for the signs that were already uploaded. The "Understanding Our Traffic Signs" PDF shows some, but not all. Mauritius is a small country, do they really have any opening bridges? The no explosives sign is a copy from Bangladesh, what source do you have for Mauritius also using that design? And what about File:UK traffic sign 557-2.svg, who proposed it? Was it the Department for Transport? Was it a local council? Please understand the difficult position I am in. Fry1989 eh? 16:34, 6 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Fry1989: You always care about things on Wikipedia that are true. I know Mauritius is just a small country. Besides, I need those signs to be put in the right categories. Not just only the source. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kingwarnen (talk • contribs) 19:24, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi, what exactly is the improvement of your edit? your comment isnt very telling. you increased filesize from 2 to 5kb, you used inkscape for editing, i use a texteditor, have a look at the source code, its bad style to overwrite simple sourcecode with tools like inkscape --Mrmw (talk) 04:44, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
- I re-drew the image from scratch. I removed the dark blue outline on the stars, re-aligned them, and fixed some rendering issues. Fry1989 eh? 14:43, 29 July 2021 (UTC)
We need your feedback![edit]
Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!
I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.
We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.
Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.
Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.
Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
