1240

First authentic document attesting the existence of the Siena Studium.

1357

The Emperor Charles IV recognizes the Siena Studium as “Studium Generale”

1408

Pope Gregory XII confirms the privileges of “Studium Generale”

1588

The Santa Maria della Scala Hospital is equipped with a “Giardino del Semplici” (garden with curative herbs)

1784

Biagio Bartalini founds the Botanic Garden of the university

1848

During the first Independence War university teachers and students join the Piedmontese army and  fight  against the Austro-Hungarians in the battle of Curtatone and Montanara.

Middle of XIX Century

The Anatomical Museum is founded

1884

An agreement is signed between the University and the Hospital Santa Maria della Scala for the operation of 5 medical departments. Two years later, the whole hospital is transformed into university teaching and research hospital.

1923

Carlo Rosselli, founder of the antifascist movement “Giustizia e Libertą” (“Justice and Freedom”) graduates in Law with a thesis “First lines of an economic theory of the workers unions”. In 1937 he was shot by Fascist killers in France.

1944

Mario Bracci, Rector of the University of Siena, grants Bachelor Degree ad honorem to three students who were killed as partisans

1990

The University of Siena celebrates the 750th  anniversary of its foundation

1994

The ‘University service center CUTVAP’ is founded with recovery tasks, inventory, study and enhancement of university scientific heritage.

1996

The National Museum of Antarctica is established to promote the dissemination of the results of the scientific breakthrough in Antarctica.

2004

The Astronomical Observatory of the University of Siena is created

2007

The Museum of Siena University System (SIMUS) is founded in order to support and coordinate the cultural and historical assets  of the University.
