DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY, BIOLOGY AND BIOTECHNOLOGY
The University of Perugias Department of Chemistry, Biology and Biotechnology has always been very active in various fields of basic research, as demonstrated by the production of its 24 laboratories. The Department has an extensive range of instruments to support the activities of the research groups; as well as commercial apparatus, there are also dozens of pieces of equipment that have been designed, manufactured and/or assembled in the Department itself. Alongside the university laboratories, the Department also houses a CNR Institute (Perugia's section of the ISTM), the CEMIN Centre of Excellence and the SMAART Centre of Excellence.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS AND GEOLOGY
The research activities are developed as part of collaborations, using the most advanced national and international laboratories: CERN, NASA, ESA, INFN, the International station in Antarctica and the Department of Civil Protection. The LUNA Lab (University Laboratory of Nanomaterials) is a perfect example of the active scientific synergy between Physics and Geology. The Lab has a field emission scanning electron microscope, equipped for chemical analysis in nanoscale, which is used mainly for research in the field of micro and nano technologies and geomaterials, as well as to explore the potential to generate business and support the development of technology transfer in the field of nano-technologies and innovative industrial materials.

DEPARTMENT OF ENGINEERING
The research, very much applied, as is typical in the field of engineering, involves national and international institutions mainly in the European Union, public and private research bodies and national and international public and private companies. The Department works with these through a large number of agreements and collaborative relationships, both in the fields of basic and applied research, which over the years have produced various spin-offs. This vision and methodological approach also apply to the Departments research centres: CRB (Biomass Research Centre), CIRIAF (Inter-university Research Centre for Pollution caused by Physical Agents) and SSTAM (High school for Territorial and Environmental Management), in which the Departments staff also operate. All of the research groups carry out their activities within a network of international partnerships and contribute to national projects both as partners and coordinators. Furthermore, the Department has a large number of specialised laboratories, many of which are part of the networks of national, European and international research infrastructures.
DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
Research is carried out within 7 interdisciplinary sections: Water Engineering, Structural Engineering, Materials and Nanotechnology Engineering, Design and Architecture, Urbanism and Land Planning, Agricultural Technologies and Applied Biological Sciences, Chemical Technologies.

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE
The research areas that have been developed also through international collaborations regard particularly current topics and involve both basic theoretical and applied research. Some of these lines of research have a marked effect on actual technological, business and social spheres. These include studies on artificial intelligence methods and models, particularly for the processing of knowledge and information, as well as for supporting decisions. Applied investigations concern the economic- financial and medical-diagnostic field of distance learning (e-learning), bioinformatics and IT safety: for example, the study of models for image processing is of great interest in the biomedical field, the diagnosis of aneurysms, engineering and the restoration of historic buildings -, as are the physical-mathematical models for the study of biological processes, such as the spread of epidemics and evolutionary processes, or the study of algebraic-geometric models for the encryption and development of quantum computers. In ICT, particular importance is given to research on digital models and support systems for communication and the transmission of information and knowledge; on the use of both wired and wireless networks; on the accessibility, connectivity and quality of web services; on high performance computing systems such as GPU, GRID and cloud computing.

DEPARTMENT OF EXPERIMENTAL MEDICINE
The fields of research that the Department is involved in, thanks to the capacity and professional experience of its professors, researchers and administrative staff, range from Infection and Immunity to Oncology, Neuroscience and Epidemiology.
The development of the activities is based on scientific and technological platforms that are strongly characterised by their transversal nature in regards to other departments and / or researchers: the Department has in fact created a Centre for Genomics, Infection and Immunity, Oncology and Neuroscience, which promotes and stimulates intra- and extra-departmental collaborations. In this ambit, the Departments professors participate in national research projects involving - to name but a few - the AIRC, the Perugia Hospital, the National Institute of Health and Telethon, as well as in international research projects.
There are numerous and diversified fields of investigation, some of which are of great social importance, such as cell transplantation therapies for autoimmune diseases, stem cell treatments for autoimmune disorders and organ transplants, right through to molecular pathogenesis, immunology and the control of transmissible agents that cause major diseases associated with poverty - malaria, AIDS and tuberculosis - or the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration and neuro repair, and the study of aspects of cardiac pathophysiology both relative and irrelative to sports.
DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY MEDICINE
Some of the active specialisations in the Department have created sectoral research centres of national importance: these are the Study Centre for the Sports Horse http://www.unipg.it/~cscs/ , dedicated to both methodological and applied research; the Animal Pain Centre http://cesda.centri.unipg.it/, which develops both methodological and applied research on the recognition and treatment of animal pain. There is also the University Electron Microscopy Centre (CUME), which provides users with its human resources and advanced tools for research in both the biological and abiological sectors.
DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL, FOOD AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES
The Department is committed to the continuous improvement of quality in scientific and technological research, advanced training and the transfer of innovations in all biological, ecological, agronomic, (bio) chemical, (bio) technological and engineering fields, as well as in cost-estimation related to the management and sustainable development of agro-environmental and food systems and territorial systems in rural areas. The skills of the Departments professors and technicians guarantee effective and efficient work in: applied technology and biotechnology concerning agri-food, agro-energy, agro-industrial, livestock, tourism and recreation, sports and ornamental supply chains; in the organisation and management of agri-food businesses; in the sustainable development of rural systems; in the planning and protection of the environment and territory; in the management of landscapes and green areas; in food production, processing and control technologies and the links between food, nutrition and health. A significant source of self-funding comes from research conducted in the Departments field teaching-experimental laboratories, educational-experimental stables and experimental food processing systems, as well as the use of germplasm and seed banks, the zoo bank and the " DBVPG Collection of industrial yeasts".

DEPARTMENT OF SURGICAL AND BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES
The high level of specialisation that some of the Departments many research groups have demonstrated has led to the foundation of three research centres: the Inter-university Phlebology Research and Training Centre, the Perinatal Medicine and Reproduction Research Centre and the Research Centre for Thyroid Genomics and Proteomics: each of the centres carries out research and avant-garde teaching activities, as well as being responsible for numerous healthcare activities. Initiatives involving the use of the "cadaver lab" and "vet lab" are among the different instruments used by the Department of Surgery for the development of research and teaching.

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES
The areas of investigation - all highly multidisciplinary - concern Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and are aimed at the rational design, synthesis and determination of stereochemical properties, the study of structure-activity relationships and the mechanism of action of new molecules of pharmaceutical interest, as well as applications in pharmaceutical technology. Other research groups are active in the fields of Organic Chemistry, Applied Biology and Pharmaceutical Biology, which includes the study of medicinal plants, vegetal drugs, their extracts and biologically active components; in General and Inorganic Chemistry; in Food Chemistry, Physiology, Biochemistry, with the development of interesting research regarding genetic diseases such as lysosomes in wings, pig stem cells and the assessment of neuro protective effects in vitro and animal models of Parkinson's disease and the relative implications for regenerative therapy.
